Booster Honors
Jerry and Wendi Moore have had three children—Matt, Emily, and Sam—graduate from Catholic Central, while Wendi herself is a 1986 CC grad. Wendi has been active on the athletic boosters since 2016. You may also recognizeWendi as she has run countless sales for the Cougar Gear store that she has run since 2016 as well. Both Jerry and Wendi have also been very active in cheer, football, baseball, and hockey fundraising and planning for their children's respective teams. A plaque in their honor has been installed atop of the booster’s deck where all boosters honorees are recognized for their commitment to Catholic Central. Please join me in congratulating Jerry and Wendi Moore.
For many years Catholic Central coaches and athletes have relied on various video techniques to document team and individual performances. This valuable resource is possible only through volunteers who spend many hours in bleachers and press boxes at home and away venues to record Catholic Central athletic teams. Joe and Theda Huyge, both 1968 Catholic Central Class graduates, are two of those volunteers who have supported the Cougar football and basketball programs for over 25 years with quality video products. Weather and distance rarely impacted their volunteer time and effort to support the Cougars. The Catholic Central community is grateful for their support over these many years and welcome the Huyge’s recognition on the walls of the Booster Club deck at Cougar Stadium.
The 2019 Booster Honors inductee is Brent Golembieski. Brent and his wife Jennifer had 4 children graduate from Catholic Central. Supporting Catholic education has always been a passion for the couple. Brent served from 2011–2015 as first the VP and then the President of the Catholic Athletic Booster Group. Both Brent and Jennifer have been heavily involved with the Catholic Central Hockey program since 2011.
This 2019 Larson Award recipient is John Stetson. John and his wife Jackie were new to Grand Rapids in 2009 and jumped right into the Catholic Central community. John joined the boosters in 2010 and held the position of President from 2011 until 2013. John currently holds the position of Cougar Open Treasurer. All who have attended this annual golf event are sure to have witnessed John doing whatever necessary to help make the Open a success. In addition to his volunteering, John and Jackie have had two daughters graduate from Catholic Central. Jackie also worked in the role of Director of Admissions and to this day the entire Stetson family continues to go above and beyond to help support the Cougar Community.
This year’s Larsen Award recipients are Tom and Lea Ebels. Tom has been the Football voice of the Cougars for the last 9 years. The first six years he traveled to the various sites we had to procure due to the lack of a home facility. For the last two seasons he has covered all of the home contests at Cougar Stadium. Prior to his tenure with Catholic Central, Tom was the announcer for nearly all games, high school and collegiate at Houseman Field for 30 years. With this in mind, Tom has been the announcer for Catholic Central Football for 39 years. He has also filled in as a basketball and volleyball announcer when called upon. Throughout his tenure as the voice of CC, Tom has displayed the true volunteer spirit, refusing any type of compensation for his fine efforts. Tom is a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids and has been affiliated with Catholic Central for the last fifty years through his marriage to his wife Lea, a 1965 graduate of Catholic Central. (In fact, today is their 50th Wedding Anniversary, congratulations!) Thank you Tom and Lea for your dedication to the Catholic Central High School Community!
The inaugural Larsen Award recipients are Michelle and Tom Smith. Their exemplary effort to organize and improve the opportunities for students and community members to show Cougar Pride through clothing, hats, signs, etc. have created a visual surge in community spirit. Their hard work establishing a mobile-sales trailer concept, and an exceptional Cougar Store at the new stadium, increased Booster Club revenue significantly. Congratulations to Michelle and Tom Smith and thank you for your efforts supporting our Catholic Central High School community.
